Mabey Family History

Mabey’s Moving and Storage began operations in 1957 when the founder, Robert Mabey started hauling apples. On weekends to earn additional income to support a young family, Mr. Mabey would move local household goods.  Whether hauling apples or relocating families household goods, he provided superior quality care and services.

In 1961, Mabey’s became an agent for Atlas Van Lines, Inc. This van line affiliation gave them the authority to handle and book moves within the 48 contiguous states.  Today, Mabey’s Moving & Storage with more than 800 affiliated Atlas Van Lines Agents worldwide, provides the very best in relocation services.

Mr. Mabey’s children grew up in and around the moving and storage industry. From the time they were old enough, Patricia, Steven and Laura worked as packers, helpers, or in the office as needed. The children are now running the business they grew up in.  In 1995, Mr. Mabey retired from the moving business and with a great deal of gratification, turned the company over to his children along with his philosophy to provide the best in quality customer service and to always “remember that you are entrusted with other peoples belongings.”

Mabey’s Self Storage began in the early 1980’s. During the 70’s Mr. Mabey observed the start of self storage during frequent visits to Florida.  In 1980, he decided to test the self storage concept at his moving warehouse in East Greenbush.  He built spaces inside his moving warehouse to provide individual storage for customers. The response was so favorable that Bob started building self storage facilities.  Today, Mabey’s Self Storage is the leader in the Capital District with 6 convenient locations.
